Classroom Images
Below are images from my kindergarten EL (English learner) classroom.
ABC Fishing Center
This center provides a fun and engaging way for students to interact with letters and words. Students "fish" to letters in order to make their names, names of other students, sight words, and seasonal words we are studying.
Names Center
The names center was created due to the best practice of using student names to teach the alphabetic principle and help students interact with letters. Students are provided with the names of all stuents in the class, as well as faculty and staff with whom they interact. Students can make the names with magnets, string letter beads to make the names, or write using the names. The name board is used throughout the day by students in their writing.
Literacy Center Choice Board
This choice board was used for literacy center management. Students used their picture card to change centers based on their interest.
Calendar Board
One of the most important parts of our day is calendar time. We sing songs (to learn content and social skills,) explore the calendar, discuss the weather, learn math concepts such as money and time, count the first 100 days of school, learn colors, explore literacy concepts such as names and poems, and learn what job each student will have that day.
Student Work and Learning Artifacts
The above worksamples were from our unit on apples. We read the book "Ten Apples Up on Top" and students put apples numbered 1-10 on top of their "heads" in the pictures. The students had to place the numbers in sequence. We completed a predictable chart after tasting red, yellow, and green apples. Students wrote which color of apple was their favorite. Finally, we completed a flow map (one of the eight thinking maps) showing what happens to an apple tree in each season. Students assisted in drawing the illustrations.
